Scenic Shoals

We live in a beautiful part of America and are proud to show it off! If you have any photos of Northwest Alabama that you would like to share, please e-mail them to us, and we'll include them here.

Here's a new addition, taken by Edna Carter, of Sheffield. It is a late-afternoon view from the standpipe looking over the Tennessee River out toward Lauderdale County. On this sight line, beyond the horizon is Waterloo, home to a growing Bald Eagle population. Waterloo is also the focal point of the annual Trail of Tears motorcycle ride and remembrance festival.

A while back Charles Rose, of the Shoals Environmental Alliance brought us some photos of Dr. Jim and Faye Lacefield's Cane Creek Canyon Nature Preserve. Thanks Dr. Tim Martin for the photos. Norma Glascock took the introduction photos of a hiking group during an outing at the Preserve.

Sheri and I were completely knocked out ! This place is beautiful ! Click on the photo to see some of the specimens there. Also, please note that we've included a couple of pictures of a tour that Dr. Lacefield gave. If you will notice, those photos were taken in the early Spring. We hope to get some better establishing shots from the warmer months. Enjoy!

Charles Rose sent us a .pdf file that you might find interesting. Here's what he wrote about it. " I'm attaching a pdf file for a map of the TVA Reservation walking trails that Dr. Tom Haggerty, UNA Biology Dept., did for Shoals Environmental Alliance. He overlaid the trails and other features on to existing topo maps available on the web (Its O.K. to use them; they are Public Domain.)
He probably will continue in the future to refine it, but if you would like to post it on The Catfish Wrapper, feel free. We are going to print some ourselves, but considering that its in color and won't be cheap to print, we are going to encourage people to print their own. We're going to post it on our website and I'm going to email the files to members.
I can't remember if I've mentioned Tom Haggerty to you before. He's the person who first envisioned the Native Plant Garden. He's been doing a long-term study of the Carolina Wren on the Reservation. All the little square bird boxes on poles around the nature area are his. He's probably the world's leading expert on the Carolina Wren. He catches them in nets, bands them, and measures their weight, wing span, etc. Might be a good subject for a video."

So... here's the map. Click HERE!

Norma Glascock and Charles Rose and wildflower Experts! Norma took the photos down at Whippoorwill Hollow and Charles got them to us with their identifications. Click Here for the Photos.

Sheri and I Charles Rose and his wife , Edna, to the TVA Reservation's Hall Memorial Native Plant Garden that The Shoals Environmental Alliance has started. A lot of people have really put in a great deal of effort into the project, and it shows. The Native Plant Garden is a cooperative effort by Shoals Chapter-Alabama Wildflower Society, Shoals Environmental Alliance, Shoals Area Master Gardeners, Shoals Men’s Garden Club, Shoals Audubon Society and TVA. Be sure to check this place out.

This fern was growing atop a downed tree that had to be cut after if fell over the road at Park Boulevard.

Here's a panoramic view of Red Rock near Barton.

The obligatory close up...

Don't know what this is called, but it's from the same area of Barton, near Fawn Lake.
